Planning for Alameda’s Transportation Future

News of the initial approval of the Alameda Landing project and the application for a chance to develop Alameda Point by 5 developer conglomerates has focused things on the ongoing plans for converting the old Naval Air Station lately.

However, exciting and important planning for the existing neighborhoods and roadways in Alameda is also underway. After two-and-a-half years of planning, many public meetings, and a lot of volunteer hours, the Alameda Transportation Commission will be discussing a Functional Street Classification System for Alameda on Wednesday, December 13th at 7:30. Sounds exciting eh?

Consider the alternatives. The discussion will focus on how to change the classification of streets in Alameda. Meaning, what will be the expected use of the street (high volume traffic, neighborhood uses) and what designs will those uses necessitate as the city moves forward (4-lanes? Wide lanes? Tree lined? Etc.)

Currently they are either classified as major or minor. (Bold streets are major; beware there have been a couple of changes since this map was made, like Buena Vista between Grand and Park is no longer major.) These classifications have very little design or functional meaning, except that traffic is expected to be heavier on Major streets and Traffic Calming efforts are limited on them.

New classifications will allow for a more nuanced understanding of Alameda’s streets, allowing even heavily used arterial-like streets that double as residential streets to receive some relief from high-speed traffic traversing the island.
