Alameda Teachers ratify new contract
So the Alameda Journal has the Scoop on this huge Alameda issue. While other the Journal doesn’t have “interesting” letters from the same 5 people, it does have a staff that tries hard to dig up news that is of interest to Alamedans (I don’t include my column in the paper as news or a part of this, so don’t take this as crowing on my part).
Over the past year and a half, the Journal’s coverage has gotten stronger and stronger on actual issues. They’ve broken a number of key stories and while occasionally details are missed (as they are everywhere), the paper is becoming more of a source for relevant, time-sensitive news. The fact that they are starting to post stories on-line as they happen will continue this trend. (quick snarky aside: whoever designed their website should be flogged. It’s virtually impossible to find the Journal on it. Go ahead…try and find it!)
All that said, They are reporting that 85% of the teachers union voted to accept the new agreement with the school district putting to rest the rising tensions over teacher pay and benefits for another three years. Congrats to the board, the teachers and most importantly the students and residents of Alameda.
(Second snarky aside (two-snark bonus day): While some folks make a big claim of “breaking news first” there’s a lot more to getting News out, and it includes reporting and interviewing, not just cutting and pasting press releases and emails. The Journal’s site has covered a number of issues in which the were “scooped” by one or another blog, however in the often less than 2-hour time difference in postings, the Journal has added context and information to their posting.)
