Dream

Quick, think about Alameda Point. What’s it going to look like?

It’s a pretty abstract concept really, and difficult to picture in one’s head. Does it all look like South Shore? Or Harbor Bay? Or heaven forbid, Park Street? Chances are, the more you think about it, the more variety of areas there are, it’s a huge area.

The Alameda Point Vision is a collaboration of Alamedans working to create and refine a proposal for what the Point can look like, based on what a large group of Alamedans want it to look like. While there are clearly going to be many different ideas of what Alameda Point should be. A cruise ship mecca? Light industrial wonderland? I believe that most Alamedans want to see a mixed-use project that is well designed and is something that they can be proud of.

There’s a second survey out not, this one focusing less on overarching direction, and more one specifics like neighborhood design and building types. Less on “should it mitigate traffic” and more on what scale the roads should be.

And instead of just asking questions, there are photos to illustrate different ideas.

The end goal is a positive vision, created by a large number of people. A vision that says “This is what we want.” Will it represent everyone’s dream? How could it? With input from almost 250 (62 times more people than the latest Kitchen Democracy poll on Meaure A), more people have shared ideas and opinions as a part for this vision process than participated in the first Suncal/Alameda Point meeting in October. This means it will represent a meaningful number of voices.

The new survey takes only a few minutes, what’s to lose?

One Response to “Dream”

  1. I wonder why there need to be _any_ homes at Alameda Point? Isn’t this place completely toxic and radioactive? Maybe it’s more suited for a shopping center and commercial business park to keep money on the island. Open space for biking, etc. and other occasional uses especially along the waterside would be nice too.

Of course, this all requires cleanup, but maybe not as much as if residential were to be built there.
