Why Can’t We Be Friends

Change is in the air. Anyone who grew up watching Christmas TV shows in the ‘70’s knows that anything can happen during the holidays. Evil Magicians suddenly befriend Snowmen, Abominable Snowmen stop eating elves and become Santa’s helpers, Heck two weeks ago, House said something nice to Foreman.

Tuesday’s Alameda Journal coverage of the Alameda Point discussion at last week’s SunCal meeting picks up the local theme and today’s East Bay Express carries it forward. It’s a theme of holiday spirit of people who once disagreed coming together to further a single vision. All of a sudden, people who just months ago were writing letters to the editor denigrating fellow Alamedans for wanting to talk about measure A are writing op-ed pieces presenting their own non-measure A compliant plans (Shout outs to you Action Alameda!)

And if that wasn’t proof enough, how’s this.

A friend of mine called the other day to tell me that she had be using The Google to look things up and for some reason had typed in my name (and the names of other Alamedans). Lo and behold, it turns out that “John Knox White” is being used as a search term for a paid advertisement for Action Alameda.

Check it out!

Action Alameda Ad

No lest you think this was a fluke, or that I’m assuming too much about it…check out this list of other search terms that turn up sponsored links for Action Alameda:

  • Beverly Johnson
  • Lena Tam
  • Frank Matarrese
  • Marie Gilmore {Turns out I forgot to google her and she doesn’t come up}
  • Lauren Do
  • Helen Sause
  • Alameda Redevelopment
  • Alameda Density{oh the faulty memory}
  • Alameda Sun
  • Alameda Times Star
  • Etc.

Doug deHaan and Alameda Daily News aren’t on the list (I didn’t leave them off, they just don’t have sponsored links). What else, beyond a large shift in positioning could this mean? Why would a group not want people who are searching for their past partner?

Doug ran on the Action Alameda Slate, a slightly different group, but one that gave all its remaining campaign money to the new Action Alameda. ADN is the personal mouth piece of David Howard, Action Alameda’s co-chair. Except for cat-fights over the ACLO, Mr. Howard is about the only “letter writer” to that site anymore.

It’s an interesting turn of events, and honestly, a welcome one.

The conversation around development at Alameda Point is looking to be really solid. The fact that one of the former most vocal proponents of keep measure A at all costs is now writing editorials proposing their own non-measure A compliant plan is a Christmas miracle.

Editor’s Note: This post was changed to correct for two inaccuracies, add the two missing tages and to include the screen shot of the ad itself.
