Quick thoughts on Charter Schools in Alameda

I had lunch with a friend the other day. A supporter of charter schools in general, and possibly a supporter of the upcoming Renaissance Leadership charter application.
As one who has always subscribed to the idea that different kids learn differently, and therefore we should teach kids in different ways, I think I might be a [...]

Pity the poor tortured soul

So I’ve started reading the East Bay Express on a semi-regular basis. Every so often there’s an item of interest and the news rack in right in front of my office, and it’s free. It’s win-win-win!
I open it up yesterday and the lead letter to the editor is from an old friend.

Old Faithful

At tonight’s Alameda Reuse and Redevelopment Authority (ARRA) meeting, the council, excuse me, ARRA Board, will decide whether to spend $200,000 to remove The Faithful, a 293 foot vessel and a barge that has recently been moored to it at the FISC property.
What’s crazy about this, is that they know how owns the boat [...]

Our House

It’s a big week for transportation related items at the Council, CIC, and Housing Authority. Things get pretty wonky, pretty quickly, and so I’ll skip the Economic Development Strategic Plan (at the CIC for Approval Tuesday), the awarding of a contract to begin the West End Estuary Crossing Feasibility Study (for bikes and peds) at [...]

In checking out the latest episode of Alameda Currents, Alameda’s weekly cable and internet news show. (Shows are available on-line for easy viewing). But I digress.
Alameda Karen Zeltzer is a personal fave of mine in terms of the content she brings to the show. and the Jan. 3 [...]

Train in Vain

On December 6th, the Oakland City Council voted to rescind the permit for Union Pacific Railroad to cross Park Street. I had checked the Oakland Council website in mid-December, but the minutes from the meeting weren’t up [...]

So I came home yesterday in the middle of one of the big rainstorms, to find the gutter on my block running white, as if a tanker truck of milk had overturned and the cow juice was running off down the street. During the course of my walk up and down the block to check [...]

Is there a Doctor in the house?

I know, two posts in one day, but with the timing issue of this, In the “file under deja vu” category, the Alameda Hospital Board has announced another vacancy.  This time it’s Kevin Farrell who is stepping down.

Which way today?

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is asking Bay Area residents about their opinions on transportation issues in order to better inform the direction of the 2035 Regional Transportation Plan. This on-line survey follows a statistically valid phone poll of over 1800 Bay Area residents.

What goes up, must come down

On Tuesday, the Alameda Journal covered something I had meant to write about last November. Which was a new state law, approved in mid-November, that allows for hospitals to postpone state-mandated seismic retrofits until 2030 (the current deadline is 2013).
Alameda Hospital is one of the hospitals that is required to retrofit, and this week, [...]
