Parcelling it all out
This week is huge in so many ways. Tomorrow: nationally (Ohio/Texas primaries) and locally (School Board votes on cuts and whether to go for another parcel tax). Wednesday: locally (ARRA (city council) votes on whether to give SunCal an extension on its base conversion plans). I just don’t know where to start.
Ok, I do. Schools and Parcel Taxes.
I’m not going to get into the cuts themselves. They are all ugly, and depending on what lens one looks at them through, they will seem unfair to someone. So how about everyone advocate strongly for their preferred plan without casting blame, guilt or aspersions on others. Make your case FOR your plan, rather than AGAINST someone else’s. It’s an idea.
The Parcel Tax Plan
The language for the parcel tax is still not available that I know of (post it if it is!) and I’m worried that the board’s going to get itself into a position where it wants to make some changes, but doesn’t want to wordsmith at the end of a long meeting and therefore approves something they are not 100% thrilled with. Today is the day to decide to announce a special meeting on Thursday night, the day before the language has to be submitted to make the June Ballot. By scheduling this meeting, the board can hear public comment on the cuts tomorrow, discuss them, discuss how the ballot measure should address them, and request that staff make adjustments to the ballot language that can be voted for on Thursday.
Nobody wants more meetings. But this is important, and needs to be done right the first time. Rushing language can easily lead to a ballot measure that will not pass, wasting a lot more time. Lets do it right the first time.
{Completely unrelated, I have to send out congratulations to the fourth grade Gilman Gunners who played a heroic and successful Basketball Champion yesterday! Coaches Dave and Bill and team sponsor Mark Gilman were incredible in helping each player grow, nurturing their competitive spirit without losing sight of the fact that they’re 10-year olds and are suppose to be having fun.}
