Make a run for the….

At the end of last week, Border’s books and music announced (also here) that it is financial trouble and may be looking to sell itself to Barnes and Noble. Within hours of these postings, the speculation began…will Border’s be coming to Alameda? Is this the end of Alameda Towne Centre as it had hoped to be known? It all sounded so dire!

As with so much speculation on the interweb, reality is less dramatic (or more, depending on your perspective). I offer the following email from Borders Group in Ann Arbor about their impending opening.

Yes, we still plan on opening our new concept store in Alameda. We’re very excited to continue to be part of this community. Our companys announcement yesterday has no impact on our new store openings or store closings. Our new location in Alameda is scheduled to open at the end of May. You can read all about our concept stores by visiting our media site at www.bgimediacenter.com and click on Concept Store.

As we open our new concept store in AlamedaTowne Centre, we are closing the Waldenbooks in the Centre on April 12. This is part of our strategic plan which was previously announced in March 2007.

The new concept store will offer the community of Alameda a new Digital Center where customers can mix and burn their own CDs- a Seattles Best Cafe, and our new Destinations or a shop within a shop that focus on Travel, Wellness, Cooking, Graphic Novels and Childrens. Please visit our media site for more details.

Thanks so much for your interest in Borders!

It would seem that Borders is on target to open right about the same time the new theater is.

  1. John, would you like to make a friendly bet that the “concept store” doesn’t last a year? 18 mos. at most?

I love these kinds of reassuring emails from PR departments. You should see the one we got back from our governor regarding schools!! (no worries….)
