A tree grows on Fernside
Yesterday, I did my best to pass along information i gathered from Public Works on the current and past projects that have/are taking place on Fernside Blvd. Poster Jill wrote in to say:
I frequently walk through the construction area and unless I am hallucinating, they are indeed digging up some of the landscaping near San Jose Ave. that they just put in with the last upgrade.
Which was not what I remembered hearing, so I reached out to Barbara Hawkins, the Public Works departments #2 who confirmed Jill’s observation saying:
The writer is not hallucinating but it sounds like I need to assure the writer that the amount of change is minor. There is a small 5 foot wide section by the in-pavement lights on the school side that needs to be removed to accommodate the school bike access from the south. When we constructed the original project we did not know if we would get the BTA grant, so the project had to stand on its own. To have constructed a 5 foot bike lane for a 12 foot length that led to nowhere would not have made sense. We had some conceptual ideas for the current project at the time we constructed the original project but did not have the funds to invest in detail design. The amount of improvement that has had to be removed from the first project is very little given the fact that we received the funding and public input for the second project from the school, recreation and commuter bicyclists, active pedestrians, and tree advocates after the first project was completed.
So there you have it.
