So You Think You Can AMP!
Alameda, please welcome your Top….Ten….Customers!
Reading through Alameda Power and Telecom’s, now Alameda Municipal Power (AMP), Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), I came across a couple of interesting fun facts regarding Alameda’s employers/energy users. Did you realize that Alameda’s top 10 employers account for nearly 20% of Alameda’s employment?
And furthermore, 5 out of the 10 employers are public agencies (or in the case of Alameda Hospital publicly supported) accounting for 12 ¼ of all employment in Alameda. (Coast Guard, AUSD, Alameda Hospital, City Of Alameda, College of Alameda).
I was a little surprised to see Safeway and Bay Ship & Yacht Company (they tenants of AGL run by John Beery of the John Beery vs. Measure H lawsuit) in the top 10.
The other equally interesting graph is the Top 10 AMP Customers:
This one is pretty important to understand. The Top 10 Customers use nearly 21% of AMP’s power and the Top 2 (hello MARAD and Coast Guard) use nearly 10%.

Well at least we know their checks won’t bounce.
What are the footnotes against the *’s in the principle employers table. (do I detect an element of style faux pas? principal = the head administrator of a school, principle = primary).

John
Your parenthetical statement appears to infer that Mr. Beery is affiliated with Bay Ship & Yacht. Is this correct? I understood that he is the landlord for BS&Y but had not ownership of the company. BS&Y does a lot to support kids in our community.

Thanks JA, I misidentified Mr. Beery’s connection to Bay Ship. They Mr. Beery’s tenants. He is the owner of John Beery Yachts. I have corrected the above post to reflect this.

The Principal is your PAL.
That’s how I always remembered the difference between the two.

I don’t know Lauren….
Sister Jean Marie, my grade school principal, was definitely not my pal.

The Asterix on the Employment grid are:
* City of Alameda count represents FTE’s only
**Safeway Stores total is a a combination of two separate locations within the City.
