Friday Budget Follies

Boy oh Boy….

Reading this mornings coverage of the state budget, I can’t focus on anything else beyond how dispiriting it is to watch our state make such ugly, terrible choices.

The $3.8 Billion cut in education will translate to about $3.8 million in new cuts to AUSD. Thank goodness we are maintaining our high prison spending! We’re going to need it.

The decimating of funding for transit (transit agencies get ZERO next year and lose almost all their funding this year) is going to reshape the transit landscape in the coming couple of years. Thank goodness there are no pressing global issues connected to increased vehicle emissions.

This will almost certainly affect the ability (slim as it already is) for AC Transit to move the Line 63 to Shoreline, may result in lower service on the 63, and could see service to Harbor Bay and the Airport decrease. Just predictions as to where things are headed.

The list goes on, but I am beginning to think that the need for a constitutional convention (or at a minimum a ballot initiative to get rid of the 2/3 rule for the state budget) is what we need right now.

Um…..have a great weekend?

  1. As long as CA is one of only 3 states that require a 2/3 majority, there will be stalemates followed by deals in which the Republican minority extracts it’s pound of flesh to avoid “gridlock”.
