Alameda Point’s life aquatic

Yesterday, a discussion erupted about the SunCal mailer that arrived out Chez SD&R last weekend. The mailer mentioned a “potential” aquatic center, which was featured on the site plan in the mailer, but not in the site plan on the Revitalize Alameda Point website.

A quick visit to the website showed that the image was clearly marked “Alternative 2″ leading one to believe that there are two proposed alternatives (thus the “potentially an Olympic-size swimming pool” line in the mailer).Revitalize Alameda Point Website Screenshot

SunCal has submitted a Sports Complex Master Plan (see below) which lays out two scenarios for what the sports complex is being proposed to look like. There are some geotechnical issues that make building a pool difficult, and there for, it’s “potential” The plan says:

Two alternate designs were initially prepared based on expectations of the land that would be available for this development. Taskforce members reviewed the merits of overlapping playing fields and came to the conclusion that the community would be best served by procuring the necessary space to support separate areas for softball/baseball fields, soccer fields, and a football/lacrosse field.
The two preferred design alternatives encompass approximately 37.8 acres to the east of First Street and 17.5 acres to the west (for a total of 55.3 acres). Alternative I includes (1) football field, (4) soccer fields, four (4) softball/Little League fields, a skate park, a renovated gymnasium, a multiuse building; (4) tennis courts, a swimming complex, sand volleyball, bicycle motocross (BMX) and two (2) play areas for younger children. Informal and group picnic areas are also planned.

The Master Plan’s Concept Plan Alternatives I & II illustrate the layout and design of the Sports Complex with and without the Aquatic Complex.

It’s my understanding that in the end, the sports complex will ultimately be decided by the City’s Recreation and Parks department. Here’s the sports complex master plan:

  1. You just really think we are a bunch of baboons, don’t you JKW. “Clearly marked” in a very light green font, indeed.

“Alternative 2″ still has a kid swimming with goggles on the cover anyway. Clear as Mississippi Mud.
