More Bridges to Nowhere
Craziness!
Word is coming down from Alameda County that the state’s proposal to raid local gas taxes could result in disastrous consequences for the City of Alameda.
Specifically, the County is looking into shutting down operations on all three estuary bridges between Oakland and Alameda as a possible option. One has to wonder how this could even possibly seem like a good idea, even for discussion, but it does highlight the issue of how the state’s actions could affect Alameda. (Nevermind that there are numerous transportation pots of money that are doled out by population that could be used to cover these costs).
In the spirit of some pretty ridiculous “analysis” about how transit cuts prove that nobody should ever focus on transit service in land use planning, I guess we should also stop planning on roadways as a transportation option, because obviously we don’t control them 100% either.

This threat seems to come up every 4-5 years.
Usually some brainiac threatens to leave the bridges UP all the times so that the ships can move underneath.
Never happens…

Local gas taxes, should only be used to repair our roads, that what we voted for !
Let the governor and our local official in state government know.

Yo, this is so dumb.
If they close them bridges, you better believe that ALL development STOPS. Ain’t nothing gonna happen at Alameda Point or anywhere. Developers will drop this island like a lead balloon. Local political suicide!
If the trucks can’t come, then the shopping centers will close. People can’t get to work, they be movin’ away.
If they shut the bridges they shut down the island. Might as well turn the whole place into a wildlife preserve and charge admission!
Folks got too much business happening here for any of that to be a real threat.

Yes, a wildlife preserve, I vote for that. Let’s restore all the wetlands.
People keep telling me that nobody reads the blogs, and I guess they’re right, since I don’t see a whole lot of reaction here.

DL: You read blogs, I would hardly qualify you as a “nobody.”
